It is lavender harvest time in the Mid-Atlantic. The flowers are just beginning to open but have not been open so long they have lost all the fragrance.
I am not the only one in my backyard interested in these though.
I have to harvest at dawn and dusk to best avoid the bumblebees and other
bees that are competing with me for these flowers.
I do not harvest all the flowers from the plant.
This is to both provide some color and fragrance left in the garden and
provide food for my pollinators.
This is a sample of what I have harvested this week.
In total I have about three to four times this amount. I rinse and hang them to dry. After they are dry I put the flowers in small organza bags. These bags work great in closets, drawers, and for gifts to other people. The bags are not very
expensive. I buy them by the pack at craft stores. I just stuff the dried flowers into the bags and tie them.
