Tomatoes – The Gateway Veggie

Tomatoes are a very forgiving plant that grows well in  pots, greenhouses, and in the ground.  They are an excellent gateway plant to get someone into growing  veggies.

My first veggie was a tomato plant.   We were issued them in grade school for a 4H project.   I took them home and they grew in buckets in a shady yard and still made  fruit.  Seriously, they were easy  enough a kid could do it with little or no supervision.   I have seen tomatoes reseed themselves and grow feral in my own garden  and in the road in some places.

If the ease of growing tomatoes does not entice someone,  the taste will.  Unless you do not  have taste buds, you will immediately tell the difference between a fresh tomato and one that was picked green and shipped to you.
