Some people say we have rather pampered poultry.
Yeah, that is correct.
They have a treat cage that can be stuffed with lettuce or spinach. It also has a bell on the bottom so they can play with the bell. They also have a rolling ball that can be filled with meal worms. When the chickens kick the ball, the meal worms fall out and they eat them. They have a mirror attached to the side of their run so they can see their reflections.
In addition to toys they get carrots and other food treats. One of their favorite treats is broccoli. I do not like to eat the stems so I recycle them into eggs by giving them to the chickens.
They also enjoy avocados. This is a hilarious sight to watch. Chickens have small tongues and can not really lick their beaks and they eat by pecking into their food. However, avocado is sticky and soft. This combination results in chickens making “popping” sounds as the avocado sticks their beaks together a little. However, the chickens love getting avocado and they are a nutritious treat.
They also have the regular layer feed and a forage block for food throughout the day.
Colder weather means their water may freeze overnight. Therefore they have a heated base the water sits on to keep it liquid.
Here is a picture of our chickens now that they are full grown.
