Many years ago I purchased an old fashioned reel lawnmower because at the time I had a very small lawn and it was a good work out. This type of lawnmower has a reel that spins vertically when the wheels are turned. The reel has a series of blades and the spinning motion sweeps the blades down to cut the grass. It looks like an OSHA violation nightmare with the open blade reel spinning full speed. And to be clear, it can be dangerous. No one should stick their finger in the reel while it is spinning. But gas and electric mowers have spinning sharp dangerous parts too.
For many reasons I kept this lawnmower even after I purchased a gas powered mower. The most obvious reason is that the reel lawnmower is really low maintenance. It requires no engine maintenance or gas. There is no fight with a pull cord to start it. And it can still serve as a backup if the gas mower is out of order. But the best reason is that this old lawnmower is now “The Loaner Lawnmower”.
Originally this was a joke about having a reel lawnmower and about random people asking to borrow tools. Someone actually asked me “why do you have THAT thing!!” and I replied “oh, that is the loaner”. I figured having a loaner lawnmower makes me more charitable since at least I am willing to help someone out. But it also weeds out (pun intended) anyone too picky about what they can get for free or too lazy to use this mower. Oddly enough I have had at least one person take me up on this offer. It turns out that I am not the only person who sees some advantages in this type of mower. The person who borrowed this wants to borrow it for one of the same reasons I own it. The quick setup makes it better for small areas.
